IMPERIAL GERMAN BADEN ORDER OF THE ZAHRINGEN LION: SECOND CLASSS KNIGHTS CROSS WITH SWORDS
HISTORY
Instituted in 1807, the Order of the Zahringen Lion and was awarded for meritorious service, both military and civil. Military decorations of the Order bore uniface crossed swords. There were five classes, the first four in gold and the fifth in silver. This medal forms part of a collection assembled by the Memorial in the 1920s for display.
DESCRIPTION
Baden Order of the Zahringen Lion, Second Class Knights Cross with Swords. A narrow, straight armed cross pattée in silver gilt with filigree ornamentations filling the angles between the arms, overlaid with crossed swords. Obverse: Convex green glass on the arms and a central medallion with an enamelled image of Zahringen Castle. Reverse: Plain arms with a central medallion bearing a gold rampant lion, facing right on a red enamelled ground. The cross is fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 31 mm light green ribbon which has 4 mm orange stripes near the edge.
