GILT FRAMED BRONZE PLAQUE MATABELE WAR 1893.
This original gilt framed bronze plaque has been professionally framed but has signs of damage to the edge of the frame. There is a period typed note on the back which reads:
MATABELE WAR 1893. 3rd December
Major Allan Wilson & 34 Troopers acting as Vanguard for General Sir John Willoughby's force in the persute of Lobengula King of the Matabele, crossed the Shangani River, became trapped by the rising flood waters, reinforcements being unable to come to their assistance were surrounded by the Matabele. They defended themselves to the last bullet and were massacered. They died singing "God save the Queen".
This bronze plaque has been removed from a War Memorial in Zimbabwe. The artist is unknown but the scene is taken from a famous painting.
Nice decorator item.
