History
The Stalag VI A in Hemer was one of the largest prisoner of war camps for soldiers in the entire German Reich. The designation is an abbreviation for main camp, with the Roman numeral VI in combination with the letter indicating that it was the first camp of this type in military district VI (Münster). It was set up in late autumn 1939 on the site of a barracks under construction and existed until it was liberated by American troops on April 14, 1945. There are also 2 war cemeteries in Hemer for the 23.900 victims of the camp.
