    WW2 AUSTRALIAN TRENCH FIGHTING KNIFE

This WW2 Australian trench fighting knife was picked up locally here in WA, it has been made in the field and is a cut down 303 bayonet. It was more than likely used in the PNG as Australians were fighting the Japanese in close quarter battles and the standard 303 bayonet was considered in some cases too long. Also there was a shortage of fighting knives available to issue to Australian troops. Also interesting is that the scabbard of the knife is a WW1 issue.

These fighting knives tell an interesting story about how Australian soldiers in the field had to improvise to get items in scarcity.
